The merger has been at times chaotic, but also very enlightening from an intercultural point of view. One theme that has come up again and again is the concept of uchi-soto and how this cultural dynamic plays such a pivotal role in personnel relations inside Japanese corporations. Add on the layer of being a non-Japanese and the dynamic gains more impact, sometimes explosive in its intensity. In this presentation I would like to share my personal experiences during the merger and how they have expanded my understanding of uchi-soto and the effect it has on both Japanese and non-Japanese employees in corporations here in Japan. This presentation will start with an activity to help participants with the concept of uchi-soto. 講師/PRESENTER: Travis Garcia has lived and worked in Japan for 14 years. He currently manages the Intercultural/Global Skills section at JAL Academy/Caplan Division/Itochu Corporation. He has a B.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an M.A. in International and Intercultural Communications from the University of Denver.
