In the early '90s many Japanese companies rushed to China to start businesses, but many failed because they were looking for quick profit without sufficient consideration or understanding of the Chinese system and culture. The current trend is for these companies not to hide their failures but to share them so that they may learn from each other's experiences. There are many books out now that explain cultural and value differences between the Japanese and the Chinese. However, these books are largely based on experience and lack systematic, theoretical analysis. The presenter will attempt a theoretical approach to Japan-China Intercultural Communication. His presentation will be followed by a panel discussion.
Professor Masamichi Mitsuma teaches Chinese language and culture at Reitaku University. He Is also the Director of the Center for International Educational Exchange there. He is the Head of the Japan-China Intercultural Communication Society. His specialization is in the study of current Chinese, and he hopes to expand the study to a more comprehensive investigation of current Chinese society. He has frequently given lectures to Japanese companies which have subsidiaries in China and realized the importance of the study of intercultural communication between the Chinese and the Japanese. This has been the main impetus for him to start the Japan-China Intercultural Communication Society. His Japanese publications are, to name a few, Gendai Chugoku Houdaikyou, Modern Chinese, Japan-China Intercultural Communication.
