プログラム内容/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION：
言語を覚えることを通して英語学習者の異文化理解が深まることは理想だろう。英語は国際化の手段と考えられ、多くの場合、生徒は異文化体験に興味を持つ。ところが多くの教師にとっては、異文化理解のコンテンツを授業に組み込むことが難しいと感じている。その結果、何年も外国語教育を受けながら、異文化教育をほとんど受けていない生徒が多く存在する。本プレゼンテーションでは、この「理想と現実のギャップ」の解決方法を紹介する。教師が文化教育を取り入れられるよう、言語教育の目的を再定義し、この方法をどのように行うのか、具体的な実例と教材サンプルを紹介する。この方法を取り入れた大学英語教育カリキュラムの例を取り上げ考察する。

In theory, English language teachers in Japan should be leaders in intercultural education. English is considered a tool for internationalization and students are often interested in intercultural experiences. Many teachers struggle, however, to include cultural content in their classes. The result is that millions of students get little intercultural education in their years of foreign language study. This presentation will introduce an approach to overcome this “language and culture gap.” It will focus on ways teachers can redefine the goals of language teaching to include cultural learning. Concrete examples of how this can be done, including materials samples, will be introduced. Examples of a university English education curriculum based on this approach will be discussed.

講師/PRESENTER：
米国カリフォルニアに生まれる。言語および異文化教育に20年以上たずさわる。PhD取得。
現在、立教大学大学院（東京）助教授。 近年の主な著作として、Identity (Oxford University Press)、Deep Culture: The Hidden Challenges of Global Living (Multilingual Matters) 、および、A Beginner's Guide to the Intercultural Experience (Intercultural Press)がある。NHKテレビ『ニュースで英会話』（English Through the News）の司会者をつとめる。日本で異文化トレーニングにたずさわる他、メキシコ、フランスなどでも言語および異文化トレーナーとして活躍。PICO異文化学習システムを開発、JII異文化教育研究所のディレクターを務める。

Born in California, Joseph Shaules (PhD) has worked in language and intercultural education for more than 20 years. He is a specially appointed associate professor at the Rikkyo Graduate School of Intercultural Communication in Tokyo. He is a successful author, with books including Identity (Oxford University Press), and Deep Culture: The Hidden Challenges of Global Living (Multilingual Matters). His most recent book is A Beginner's Guide to the Intercultural Experience (Intercultural Press). He is a co-presenter of the NHK television program English Through the News. He does intercultural training in Japan, and has lived and worked abroad (Mexico, Japan, and France) for more than 20 years. He is proficient in English, Japanese, French and Spanish. He created the PICO Intercultural Learning System and is the director of the Japan Intercultural Institute.

場所案内/How to get there?:
麗澤大学東京研究センター(新宿アイランド．タワー4階／新宿区西新宿 6-6-1)。アイランドタワーは、丸の内線西新宿駅と直接つながっています。JR新宿駅からは、徒歩10分です。低層階行のエレベーターに乗り、4階で降りて廊下を右へ進んでください。左側一番奥のドアが、麗澤大学東京研究センターの入り口です。

i-Land Tower can be accessed directly from Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Marunouchi Line by following the underground path. From JR Shinjuku Station it is approximately a 10-minute walk. Once you get to the building, select an elevator that stops on the 4th floor. After you get off on the 4th floor, walk to the right until you get to the last door on your left.
